Mallinckrodt Opioid Addiction
Overview
While companies like Purdue Pharma became the public face of the opioid crisis for their brand-name drugs like OxyContin, Mallinckrodt was a colossal force in the background. It was, at one point, the country’s largest manufacturer of generic opioids.
The scale of its operation was staggering. Data made public from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) revealed that between 2006 and 2012, Mallinckrodt’s subsidiary, SpecGx, supplied 28.9 billion oxycodone pills in the U.S. That amount was equivalent to more than 80 pills for every person in the entire United States.
